Reflecting On An Impactful 2025

As we look back on 2025, it’s clear that it has been a transformative year for the Torch Lake Protection Alliance (TLPA), laying a strong foundation for our initiatives in 2026.

Our family membership is nearing an impressive 600, and we’ve expanded our business membership to 50. This growth reflects our community’s commitment to preserving the beauty and health of Torch Lake.

A significant highlight this year was the culmination of our multi-year effort to raise $1 million for the Keep Torch Lake Blue project. Despite facing federal budget cuts and a government shutdown, we maintained essential matching funding from the United States Geological Survey (USGS). This project has not only brought together expertise from across the nation, but also galvanized all organizations dedicated to the stewardship of Torch Lake. We’re particularly optimistic about the groundbreaking report from USGS scheduled for release next year. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to the dedicated volunteer Project Team that has been managing KTLB for the past four years. Their efforts are now crystallizing into a comprehensive “state of the lake” report set to be unveiled in mid-2026. This report will provide critical insights into water quality changes and the risks ahead, serving as a vital resource for understanding and addressing potential challenges.

In our pursuit of excellence in environmental stewardship, we have fostered collaboration among the six townships surrounding Torch Lake. For the first time ever, we convened township leadership at our GEM event in the spring, facilitating open dialogue and encouraging a unified approach to lake protection.

Our advocacy for robust zoning and ordinances to safeguard the lake remains unwavering. We are working diligently to address gaps in regulation, as one township currently lacks any protective ordinances, while another has begun to restore essential regulations that were lost over a decade ago—a loss that have had regrettable consequences for our ecosystem. The threat posed by Banks Township, which is seeking to eliminate all zoning ordinances, is particularly alarming given its position at the headwaters of the chain-of-lakes.

Throughout the year, we have been proactive in monitoring lake projects. In January, we recognized that the construction of the DNR boat launch near Torch River was off track. Our intervention—engaging with EGLE and the DNR—was crucial in redirecting the project for the betterment of both Torch Lake and Torch River.

We remain vigilant about developments across townships, from marina proposals to short-term rental regulations and septic system ordinances. These ongoing efforts serve as a vital check and balance to protect the lake’s integrity.

We have significantly enhanced our communication efforts this year by delivering four newsletters, nearly doubled our social media followers, and published our inaugural Annual Report. Additionally, we actively participated in several community events and recently launched a new brochure, which is now available at our township offices and many of our business members’ locations.

Our legal defense fund now stands at a robust $130,000—not a resource we wish to utilize frequently, but an important safeguard when needed.

Partnering has been a cornerstone of our mission, evident in collaborative efforts to preserve the habitat at Torch River Islands and combat the spread of Eurasian Milfoil.

We extend our sincere appreciation to our collaborators—Torch Conservation Center, Elk Skegemog Lake Association, Soil Conservation and Sedimentation Control, Antrim Conservation District, Three Lakes Association, ERCOL-WPIT, and the Tipp of the Mitt Watershed Council. Special thanks also go to our dedicated volunteers who tirelessly advocate for the health of our trees and ecosystems. In the face of ongoing challenges, we need your support now more than ever to protect the lake we all cherish.

As we look ahead to the new year, we remain steadfast in our mission to safeguard Torch Lake. Wishing you all a joyous holiday season and a happy New Year!
